Sensible points - but with regard to the fourth one, I'd guess that the NYT might be a little wary, for a number of reasons, about putting in YouTube videos with big "ABC" logos at the bottom of them.

The NYT are certainly doing a lot right on the web though - as far as social media sites like Digg etc are concerned, the NYT is the Internet newspaper of record.

Thanks for the comment Jeff. You're right. There is plenty of room for all kinds of stories on the web. However, I believe this story in particular could definitely use a more visual element to help complement the long-form article. I love reading the beginning of these stories, but it's rare online I can make it through the whole thing. I think I'm likely not alone. I do think these suggestions could get people through a longer story more.

I disagree with this post. What you're describing seems to me to be actually a different kind of journalism *writing*, not just journalism production. You're advocating a blog-style, quick-hit scannable article. What the NYT does, and does well, is prose-style, long-form articles with far more depth than the typical blog article provides. They are different beasts.

There's room for both kinds of articles on the web, but one does not supercede the other, in my opinion.
