To add to my point further, as I type this I see a previous post headline below "Are you making these 7 teaser-writing mistakes?" which is a adaptation of the great print headline "Do you make these mistakes in English?"

What makes theses headline so appealling are the words "these" and "mistakes". - not just any old mistakes but specifically these. A kind of challenge to the reader.

I think this is a great article and a great subject. I do however disagree with you slightly in the sense that how you have suggested a web headline should be i.e. "On the web, headlines take on the role of telling the entire story in limited words."

This is in fact how the headlines in the most profitable direct response print and mail order adverts are crafted (which is different from newspaper edatorial headlines)

It seems obvious but is often overlooked - to get people to read your article or visit your page you must appeal to their selfish desires - people pychology has not changed since the dawn of man

So in all the best headlines in print and web must call out to a specific audience (or keyword / phrase) and offer a specific selfserving benefit so the reader is compelled to click your link or continues to read your article - consider studying the great advertising legends John Caples, Gary Halbert, Gene Schwartz and adopt these tried and tested method to suit the web
