How to comment on blogs without leaving your reader!

by Shawn Smith on February 1, 2008

Partial feeds stinkOne thing that has long plagued my web feed-reading experience is the problem of having to visit a blog to actually comment on a post. Don’t get me wrong. I love visiting blogs and seeing what’s going on. But I have longed for a day when I could comment from my Google Reader account without ever opening a new tab/window.

That has changed!!!!

When I ranted about how providing full feeds trumps partial feeds, I included a link to a greasemonkey script that allows users to get around the partial feed problem. (Greasemonkey is a Firefox plugin that has loads of benefits – and not as scary as it sounds)preview link for partial feed-buster greasemonkey script

Try installing this script and you will notice that when reading feeds of any nature, partial or full, you are given a “preview” link, which shows up next to the other traditional “share,” “email,” and “tag” options.

What happens next is even better. Click the “preview” option, and the full web page will appear in your Reader window. Now you can see everything on that post even though the feed provides only part of the full content.

And then comes the happy surprise – You can also comment!

Now that the full entry shows up inside your reader, the comment option also appears (at least in my tests, commenting functions seem to work).comment in google reader using greasemonkey script

Pretty cool right? That might help you manage your time better. No more opening a ton of windows and remembering what you want to say when managing your feeds.

Thanks guys! So far I’m really liking it. One thing I have noticed, if you click the headline of an entry, it will automatically view the page in your reader. To make the page pop out, you have to middle-click or control click

Assuming either the Left Wing or the Right Wing gained control of the country, it would probably fly around in circles.
