Tom Curley, the President and CEO of Associated Press has announced that the the inverted pyramid is, in fact, DEAD!

Why is it six-feet-under? Because the time has come for journalists to figure out more ways of reporting news and information to match the preferences of consumers, Curley says. What’s that mean to me? He’s telling journalism to “get over it.”

Get over the gatekeeper mentality. Get over the idea of not cooperating.

Journalism is a to-be-celebrated craft with a great and powerful history. But….

“Editors need to stop pining for the old world and intensify the leading to the new,” Curley adds.

And how do editors do that?

The first thing that has to go is the attitude. Our institutional arrogance has done more to harm us than any portal. We must understand and embrace the new ways people such as Madi Reddy are consuming content.

Consumers have changed. It’s time for information reporting to do the same.

Stop thinking about how the news industry can yell information at people, er, inform them, and start thinking about how reporters can converse with the public about issues and news so everyone gains a better understanding.
