Looks like online producers might find themselves in crowded company soon.
According to CNet.com, a recent study found people spend more time surfing the web than reading newspapers.
U.S. consumers this year will spend more of their day surfing the Internet than reading newspapers or going to the movies or listening to recorded music, according a study released on Tuesday.
Coupled with the fact that newspapers will be dead by 2011 (as reported by a study noted by a Wired blog), it’s likely that more and more news junkies will be trying their hand at blogging, multimedia and joining online news organizations.
But is the money going to be there?
Here’s how Wired reported a recent advertising study:
“Internet advertising is expected to become the largest ad segment in 2011, surpassing newspapers.†The report also claims that in 2008 communications spending will reach $1 trillion for the first time, and hit $1.222 trillion in 2011.
So will a 2011 go down in history as witness to a great migration to a new frontier - the likes of which we can liken to the California gold rush? Possibly.
With more and more newspapers cutting staff (Romenesko made note recently the Oregonian offered early retirement buyouts to 32 staffers), and the money in the online world apparently on an upswing, it’s likely more people will seek to move to the web.
Hear that, producers, reporters and anyone hoping to keep a job in media? It’s time to get creative, show your stuff and make yourself valuable. Pretty soon, everyone and their grandma with an inkling about what RSS feeds can do or how Facebook can apply to media organizations are going to be snapped up.
So here’s some advice to those who want to get an early start (or late one for that matter):
- Get a blog
- Read blogs
- Comment and respond to comments on blogs
- Learn how to use RSS feeds to your advantage (feedburner)
- Make a Facebook profile and learn about twitter
Think it’s not necessary? Tell that to the person your interviewing with when you’re trying to snag that online producer job.
What do you think? Do online producers have anything to worry about? Will competition get over-the-top?
